ING Group can trace its European roots back to 1845. The organisation, as we know it today, was formed in 1991 as a result of the merger between the largest insurance company in the Netherlands, Nationale-Nederlanden, and the banking giant, NMB Postbank Group. The merger produced a dynamic, integrated financial services provider with a global reach that today encompasses 65 countries.

1809 Our history in Canada is one of continual growth and expansion, which began almost two centuries ago, when The Halifax Fire Insurance Association was established in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A member of the ING family since 1959, The Halifax Insurance Company changed its legal name to ING Insurance Company of Canada on January 1, 2002.
1907 La Compagnie d'Assurance Mutuelle du Commerce (Commerce Group) began in Saint-Hyacinthe at the beginning of the last century. Now the leading insurer in Quebec, they joined ING in 1989. Commerce Group changed its legal name to ING Insurance Company of Canada on July 1, 2002.
1940 Western Union began as a family business in Calgary. One of the premier property and casualty companies in Western Canada, they became a part of ING in 1988. Western Union changed its legal name to ING Insurance Company of Canada on July 1, 2003.
1955 Belair Insurance Company joined ING in 1989, after more than 30 years in business. The site of belairdirect was launched in 1995 and is recognised today as the first North American insurer to sell insurance over the Internet.
1988 ING Novex was established as Canadian Group Underwriters - a national company that specialises in home and auto insurance for members of employer groups, associations and affinity groups. Novex joined ING in 1999.
1997 ING Bank of Canada, Canada's leading virtual bank, began offering banking products and services over the phone and through the Internet.
2001 ING Wealth Management Inc. was established as a registered mutual fund dealer to offer various investment products and services.
2002 ING Halifax, ING Commerce Group and ING Wellington were consolidated into ING Insurance. ING's annual Canadian premiums surpassed $3 billion for the first time.
2003 ING Western Union was consolidated into ING Insurance.
2004 ING Canada acquired the property and casualty business of Allianz of Canada. In December, ING Canada launched an IPO and began trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange.
